6409739tn I finished The Cavalier in the Yellow Doublet, the fifth book in the Captain Alatriste series by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

Alatriste vies with the King for the bed of a beautiful actress, and Íñigo has adventures of his own, in Spain in the 1620's.

My rating:

I finished the eARC of Lois McMaster Bujold's latest, Captain Vorpatril's Alliance at lunch yesterday. As an advanced copy, it still has some editing, and I had an issue with the line-spacing they chose to use, but I wanted to finish reading it before I made any edits. It will be fun to do some automated comparisons of this with the final version when it's released in November.

I think this will be a great addition to the Vorkosigan series, and Ivan was the logical one to get his own book next. I could see others getting this treatment -- Mark, or one of Miles' kids, or even an older Cordelia book.

My rating:

I finished The Black Moth, a pre-Regency novel by Georgette Heyer, and the first book she ever wrote.

Lots of derring-do, with a villainous Duke and an honorable Earl, who in the end sit down to a nice dinner after their to-the-death duel is stopped mid-stream.

Not Heyer's best, but a great first effort -- she was 17 when she wrote this book.

My rating:

I finished reading Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas by John Scalzi. Something of a cross between Star Trek and Galaxy Quest, I thought it worked very well.
